We petition the Needham High School to bring back diverse math options and allow for more flexibility within the pathway.
Prior to the pandemic, students were placed into either the advanced or the regular math track using 5th grade MCAS scores as well as placement tests in 6th grade. Starting with the class of 2026, the advanced option was removed and all students were placed into the regular math track.
What are the implications of removing advanced math options?
Many Needham students study math extracurricularly (through AoPS, Khan Academy, RSM, tutors...). Making them sit through material they already know is counterproductive for their learning.
Students who need extra help don't receive it, and feel unnecessary stress from others in their class. Students who need more help with the content are often overshadowed by those who are not challenged enough.
Having varying ability levels in a classroom is stressful for teachers. If those who prove they know the material are allowed to skip the class, teachers will have a more balanced classroom environment.
Our proposals
The advanced math program (diagram shown above) had sparked an interest in mathematics for many students. Our goal is to restore the program to its pre-covid state. Students would take a placement test in 6th grade, and then be placed into either normal or accelerated math in grades 7 and 8 (although could be moved up by parent request).
Testing out used to be offered at Needham High, however it is no longer available. Our goal is to allow any student to receive full credits for a course by taking the final exam (or a comprehensive exam of some sort).
Currently, students are able to substitute some classes in school by taking them at a local community college instead. However, the enrollment process is tedious and expensive (around $1000 per class). Our goal is to apply Needham for state-sponsored funding through the CDEP program and to partner with a local community college such as Massbay to simplify the enrollment process for NHS students.
